Buna-N (NBR) vs FKM (Viton®) for O-Rings and Seals

Buna-N (NBR, Nitrile, Buna)

FKM (Viton®)

Description
Both materials are well suited for use in the -30 to 125°C range. FKM has an advantage in lower temperatures and FKM has an advantage in higher temperatures. Marco offers specific compound formulations extending these ranges even futher as can be seen in the following compound comparison chart. When comparing these materials with respect to electrical current resistance, FKM has a slight advantage. The differences in compression set resistence show that FKM has a slight advantage. Additionally, FKM has a slight advantage when considering wear resistance. Also, FKM has a slight advantage when comparing heat stability. Furthermore, Buna-N has a slight advantage when comparing short term resilience. Finally, FKM has a slight advantage when evaluating differences in permeation resilience. Both materials are resistant to solvents, common fuels, mineral oils, vegetable oils, greases, aliphatic hydrocarbons, silicone oils, petroleum oils and di-ester lubricants, with Buna-N having specific resistences to acids, diluted alkalies, hydraulic fluids, water, ethylene glycol fluids and alcohols. FKM has specific resistence to steam, ozone, compression set, broad spectrum chemical resistance, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, non-flammable hydraulic fluids, aging, strong acids, brake fluids, acetone, halogenated hydrocarbons, vacuum and most acids.
