Yeast, aqueous (also known as yeast extract) is a mixture of proteins, peptides, nucleotides, and amino acids derived from yeast cells. It is commonly used in food production for its umami flavor and aroma, as well as in the production of vitamins and enzymes. Yeast extract is also used in a variety of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
When rubber is exposed to yeast extract, it can cause a range of failure types. Swelling and softening are common, as is cracking and embrittlement. Yeast extract can also lead to discoloration and staining due to its ability to penetrate the material. The chemical can also reduce the elasticity of rubber, leading to a decrease in its tensile strength and flexibility. In addition, yeast extract can cause the rubber to become brittle and prone to fracturing.
