Tributoxyethyl Phosphate (TBEP), also known as Tributyl phosphate, is an organic phosphate ester used as a plasticizer and a flame retardant. It is commonly used in the manufacturing of plastics, rubbers, and textiles.
When exposed to tributoxyethyl phosphate, rubber materials can suffer from a variety of failure modes. These can include softening, embrittlement, and discoloration. Softening can occur due to the plasticizers in the chemical leaching out the plasticizers in the rubber, leading to a loss of strength and elasticity. Embrittlement can occur as a result of the chemical breaking down the polymers in the rubber, leading to a loss of elasticity. Discoloration can occur due to the chemical reacting with the rubber’s pigments.
