Dibutyl ether, also known as dibutoxyethane, is commonly used as a solvent in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and pesticide industries. It is also used as a fuel additive, cleaning agent, and degreasing agent.
When rubber is exposed to dibutyl ether, the rubber can become brittle and crack. This is due to the ether’s ability to leach plasticizers from the rubber, which can cause the rubber to become hardened and more prone to cracking. The ether can also corrode the rubber, leading to further damage and premature failure.
