Barium sulfide, also known as barium polysulfide, is an inorganic compound commonly used in the manufacturing of fluorescent lamps, as a precursor in the production of other barium compounds, and as a reducing agent in the production of other metals. Common failures with rubber exposed to barium sulfide include physical degradation, swelling and softening, and chemical attacks. Physical degradation occurs when the barium sulfide particles abrade the rubber surface, leading to surface wear and tear. Swelling and softening occurs when the barium sulfide particles are absorbed into the rubber, leading to a decrease in hardness and elasticity. Chemical attacks occur when the barium sulfide reacts with the rubber, leading to corrosion and breakdown of the rubber material.
